Don + first name

Don + first name
‘Don’ is a Spanish title of respect which was originally accorded to men of the highest rank, then became more general as a courtesy title. It may be used by Spanish speakers when speaking English, as in John Steinbeck’s To a God Unknown: ‘Se or, is it you, Don Joseph?’ It is also sometimes used by native English speakers addressing a Spanish-speaker in English. ‘I have to tell you, Don Pedro, that sort of talk always makes me uncomfortable,’ says an American to a Mexican who practises medicine in The Middle Man, by David Chandler. ‘Don’ derives ultimately from Latin dominus, ‘lord’.
